LA four piece Allah-Las will be touring Australia next month. Tomatrax caught up with Matthew Correia, the band’s drummer and vocalist, to ask a few questions.

Where did the name Calico Review for your album come from?

A bit of Western lingo trip. I like that people have come up with their own ideas about the meaning.

What inspired you to release the album on cassette and vinyl?

Multiple mediums for all the types freaks and greeks. We make what we would want ourselves for the most part.

You’ve just put out your latest single, what made you decide to record an alternative take of Autumn Dawn?

That’s the demo version recorded before the studio session. We liked both. We may release some other demos in the future. Perhaps on wax or just on the Boobtube.

Has any work begun on your next release?

We recorded a film soundtrack and a covers EP recently. Both should be flying around soonish. Pedrum recorded an album last month under his solo project called, PAINT. Lovely stuff. Look out for that.

You’ve added a third Melbourne date after the first two were sold out, did you expect to get such a positive response?

We know there’s a strong relationship between Australia and California but we didn’t know what to expect really. We’re honored.

Where did the name Allah-Las come from?

It’s a mix of words we felt represented us and our sound when we started. We don’t really want to explain the meaning of our band name, albums, song titles etc. They mean something to us but we’ll leave it open to interpretation. Feel like music is loosing some very special qualities with all the social media, live feeds and internet information available. Pre-internet if you loved an album you had to dissect and decrypt all the lyrics and everything written on the front and back cover or maybe bug your local grumpy record store employee for more information and meaning. There’s just no more mystery anymore.

Do you ever listen to your own music?

Maybe for reference or while working on it but no. Usually over it by the time were done writing, recording, mixing, remixing, mastering etc.

What music do you listen to?

Lots of different music. There’s something amazing to be discovered in just about every genre and decade if your curious enough to dig for it. Check out our weekly podcast at ReverberationRadio.com for a taste

What do you have planned after your upcoming tour?

There’s talk of Bali and perhaps Japan and then Europe in the summer. We really wish we we’re going to make it to Western Australia, New Zealand and everywhere else we’re missing on this trip. We want see it all. Some decisions just aren’t ours for the making sadly. Hopeful we’ll be coming back soon for a longer stay.
