Melbourne based Garage/Blues Rock outfit The Jack Rabbit Slims have just released their latest single ‘Welcome To The End’ and are kitting up to take the East Coast by storm. Tomatrax caught up with Alex, the band’s bass player and vocalist, to ask a few questions.
How did the band form?
The band started after Nick and Peter’s previous band Les Garcons decided to take a break and Alex was in the mood to make some sweet tunes so it kinda just made sense.
Where did the name Jack Rabbit Slims come from?
In all honesty, we stole it from the film Pulp Fiction, so heres hoping Tarantino doesn’t sue us…
You’re about to tour in support of your EP, what can fans expect from your shows?
A couple of dashingly good looking guys playing their hearts out and not getting a lot of sleep. We are still perfecting our live show so expect a lot of messy but totally real shows.
Where did the title Deadbeat Odyssey come from?
One of our girlfriends said we needed a name or a logo of some kind that is true to the guys in the band, and well we are all pretty poor so it just fit.
Was it hard to pick what songs made it onto the EP?
Not really we were all pretty keen on these particular songs, we’ve written a bunch since that we feel are even stronger but thats for another EP I guess.
Are there any plans for an album release?
No plans for an album just yet, probably another EP. Its hard to say because we sort of just write songs then record em and just get em out and try to put our as many songs for free as we can.
You’ve entered songs on Triple J’s Unearthed page, has this had any impact on your music’s exposure?
Not a huge impact but getting a bit of play on Unearthed radio has helped us secure a few bigger shows, like supporting Hey Geronimo. That was definitely helped along by Unearthed.
On your Unearthed page you list Kevin Rudd as an influence, in what way has Kevin Rudd influenced you?
Well there is a lot of politics in the music industry and we just aline ourselves more so with Rudd …I mean we don’t exactly have a lot in common with Abbott.
Do you ever listen to your own music?
I think we listen to it too much during the mixing stage. Not to mention playing it live and in rehearsals. Its kind of like running your favourite song into the ground to an extent.
What other music do you listen to?
We are all big fans of bands like Pixies, The Strokes, The White Stripes a lot of garage rock basically but at the same time we love Robert Johnson, its a bit of a mixed bag.
Have you ever been confused with a cover band from Louisiana?
Haha, no but I really hope we do one day. Cover bands are awesome.
What do you plan on doing after your tour?
Probably head right back into the studio like we said we have a bunch of new songs we are itching to record and get out there. After that, who knows maybe another tour, maybe get signed to Geffen Records and release this decades Never Mind but then go mad with power and take over Australia and turn it into a dictatorship.
